Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at their own pace. I try to make sure that fundamentals are always maintained and that the music we are covering in lessons is stimulating and challenging while still being enjoyable for the student so that they can develop musical expression along with a strong technical foundation. I believe that music students are not "one size fits all", so I create an individual approach catered to each student's strengths, weaknesses, and interests. For beginners, I typically start with the very basics such as putting the instrument together(if applicable), posture/form, and fingerings. For beginners I intent to teach the main guidelines of the instrument such as its properties, history and basic techniques to play properly. Then, I proceed to show them the fundamentals of the instrument such as scales and rhythm exercises to start. I always try to Introduce new lessons with a little bit of music theory tips to help them understand what they are doing, I reinforce this strategy by teaching them written music. Read More

I am percussionist, composer and educator, Larry Q. Draughn Jr. I've been "banging on stuff" and trying to understand rhythm for most of my life. The first 16 years of my journey were self taught and the past 13 have been supplemented with formalized training. I've shared the stage with greats like Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, and Christian McBride to name a few. My gift has and is taking me all around the world. Read More

While at Eastern I studied with Christopher Howard, a member of the United States Coast Guard Band. I have also spent summers at Brevard Music Center and the Philadelphia International Music Festival, studying with Steve Cohen, David Blumberg, and Ricardo Morales, as well as working as the production intern for the Hartford Symphony Orchestras Talcott Mountain Music Festival. In my time at Eastern, I won the New England Intercollegiate Band Festival Solo Competition, as well as receiving multiple awards from the music department, including the 2019 Undergraduate Creative Activity Fellowship, and the 2020 Outstanding Honors Thesis Award for my project, Leonard Bernstein and the Twentieth Century Crisis of Faith.
