 Before this, I taught elementary school-age children in summer camp, was a lead teacher at a preschool for children ages 1-5, and taught solo French horn students from local high schools throughout my college career.  I have had success with all age groups, using my skills to break down the toughest musical passages into simple and easy-to-understand instruction.   My teaching career began in college. I taught trombone lessons and was an instructor for the Hampton University Band Camp. In 2009 I became a graduate assistant at Central Michigan University. I also taught at an elementary school while I was in graduate school. After college I moved to North Carolina and became a band director on the middle school and high school level. My strongest skill is composition and arranging.  My works have been played on the middle school, high school, collegiate, and professional level.  This skill set includes jazz, popular music, classical, gospel, small ensembles, and large ensembles. To begin, I will start with chords and scales to get a student used to understanding of notes and progressions. Next, I would go over theory and technique in order to blossom a stylistic way of playing for the student. Next, I would start with simple etudes and pieces for each student to learn and master. Afterwards, the student will choose a piece they want to learn. Finally, the student will decide the genre and style of later pieces they would like to learn. Read More

I have taught private voice/piano lessons for the 5 years. I have experience teaching students from ages 10-65. When teaching any student at any level, I begin with fundamentals in order to better assess their skill level. As other techniques are introduced, I continue to reinforce the fundamentals. I encourage my students to practice every day and help them to set goals for their practice sessions throughout the week. My students are encouraged to bring music they enjoy singing and playing to their lesson. Read More
