I believe in a student learning to hear music and think for themselves. Through ear training, creativity, and learning "how" music works, the goal is to get each student to not need a teacher to learn their instrument, but want a teacher so they may become their best version of it. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with note naming and sound. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. When working with new flute students, my focus is on a solid sound, technique, hand/body position, and learning to read and play music. To help learn to read the notes, I use Hal Leonards Essentials Elements Series. Once the student has learned to read music and has learned all of the notes, I begin using Taffanel and Gauberts 17 Daily Exercises to build the students technique and knowledge of scales, arpeggios, etc. Read More
