I will always explain "why" we are learning something, whether it's a particular technique or topic and "how" we go about accomplishing it. For Intermediate level students, I'll take music theory a little deeper and we'll gain an understanding of different styles and progressions such as the 12-bar (Blues), 1-4-5 (Rock/Pop) and 2-5-1 (Jazz) progressions in popular music along with soloing techniques. By giving piano lessons, all kinds of music knowledges should be taught. I prefer focus on both performance skills and the art/music knowledge in general. Homework is always needed because being able to play piano is the goal of the students.I will have my students practice etude, sonata/sonatina,polyphony pieces and modern pieces at the same time.
