For beginning to intermediate students, I use the Suzuki Method. Each successive piece introduces a new skill, so that the student is always building on learned skills. Dr. Suzuki, the founder of the Suzuki Violin Method, spoke often of the “Suzuki Triangle.” This is an equilateral triangle with Parent, Teacher, and Student in each of the corners. The triangle helps illustrate that each role is equally important. For beginning strings students (even young children) to advanced students, I use the Suzuki method along with the accompanying sight reading book, I Can Read Music. Advanced students who have reached Suzuki book 6 and beyond are invited to seek out other repertoire as a supplement to their Suzuki studies. Students who are involved in an orchestra are also invited to bring excerpts of their music to their lessons so that I can help them to feel confident and prepared at playing tests and auditions. My method for teaching is usually based mainly on repertoire. I use a series of books called the Neil A. KJOS Piano Library. In every lesson we will work on and practice two to four pieces of music from different genres and time periods. For beginner students, we will use elements in the music to learn theory and technique. I'm a passionate musician who eats, sleeps, and breathes music. The minute I had a guitar in my hand since I was 14, I never stopped falling in love with the instrument. While I graduated in 2015 with a Bachelors of Science degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I was performing with local musicians around the area and taking jazz lessons with faculty and students within the university. Since moving to Detroit at the end of 2015, I have become integrated within the local Detroit music scene, playing with two bands currently, which have played music festivals such as the Hamtramck Music Festival and the Detroit Concert of Colors.
