I am an avid listener as well as player. I perform as a solo guitarist specializing in Celtic and American acoustic music. I also work as an accompanist on a variety of instrument (mandolin, dulcimer, banjo, guitar) for singer-songwriters. You can catch my band Harper Valley Hypocrites performing locally. Our material cover Dylan to Zevon as well as some great original tunes. All of my lessons will begin with listening to the student to understand where they are currently in their skill level. We will then spend time learning (or reviewing) the basics and correcting any issues at the core of the study, such as breathing or posture. We will go over the basics thoroughly to make sure that there is understanding and consistency in practice. I base my teaching methods on the student I am teaching. For students that are children at a beginner level, I typically begin with the essential elements of creating vocal foundation which I draw from many sources. Once we have set a good foundation, we tend to begin working on repertoire that is appropriate for the level at which they are singing, using those songs as learning opportunities. For adults, I begin by asking about the goals of the individual student and I then formulate a strategy to help the student reach their specific singing goals. Read More

I think relationships is what drives everything. If you don't build a trustworthy relationship with your student and learn about who they are and what they like then, you will not have a successful turn out. I believe in only sticking with what the student is comfortable with learning. I will push and stretch them when it is needed, but I like to start by asking "what do you want to learn?" I believe in setting an achievable goal in every lesson. Read More
