Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. I start lessons by warming up and doing exercises. For children, I do this in a listen and response setting. Then I will work through school songs or performance pieces, focusing on rhythms first, notes second and musicallity third. These 3 aspects lead to musicial mastery. I finish each lesson with an easy cool down. With in each lesson, I focus on musical styles that the students are interested in and work towards goals that the student set for themelves. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Piano or Guitar Lessons for the Young Beginner by Andrew Scott and Gary Turner. The student, even at a young age, learns an introduction to music theory. Each concept is taught in a very methodical and step-by-step approach. As a teacher, I am looking to prepare students for ongoing learning for years to come. The language of music can be very confusing and I am looking for ways to minimize those perplexing times. Essentials are first. Note names, hand position, mouth position, air, posture, rhythms, sheet music, ear training - it's all important and needs to happen concurrently. Everyone has different strengths; some students are able to handle a large amount of information stacking while others need a more one-at-a-time approach. Music is all about doing several physical and mental things at once, developing self awareness in learning *how* to improve a skill, and myelinating the pathways in your brain for the fastest connections possible. I believe that positive reinforcement is the best way to encourage my students to attain the confidence that is needed as a performer. Musical expression is a visceral experience and I strive to create a comfortable environment for my students. Because sometimes learning an instrument can be tedious, I like to break my lessons up with warmup, rudiment, etude and dexterity exercises; Scale and theory practices; repertoire development in multiple styles including original works; and finally improvisation and listening.
