I use a variety of books, tailored to the student based on my initial viewing of their abilities and what they are interested in learning. I also create my own lesson plans using exercises and music I have written myself. No two lesson plans will be the same as everyone learns differently and has different strengths and weaknesses. My method is a balanced approach between learning the technic to play the instrument and the harmony/theory involved with what the student is learning. For everything learned there are exercises with songs from any music style that the student would like to focus on. My goal is to make sure every student has fun with their instrument. Nothing is worse than seeing a student hate their instrument because they are forced to play. I have supplemented scales and technical exercises with rock music, church music, and Disney songs to keep each child engaged! If a student is self-motivated, they are more likely to practice on their own, continue finding new music to play, and want to advance their skill level to play more challenging repertoire. What I like to do is find out what my students know about music and then work from there. For instrumental I start with basics and play through scales to see how they play and how they can improve. For students that are younger or completely new to music, we would start with very basic general music terms and would become very close to the instrument of choice knowing the parts, how sound works with the instrument and how to properly play the instrument (close to the Suzuki method). my instructions are easy to follow no matter the age or ability level.
