I love seeing students enjoy their music lessons! I typically begin the lesson asking the student how their practice went for them, allowing them to communicate their successes and struggles from the previous week's practice. We then set some attainable goals for the lesson, and the student then shows off whatever they worked on that week. My method of teaching can vary from student to student, but my primary way of teaching is what I like to call, sound before symbol. Learning music is like learning a language. We do not come out of the womb and handed a dictionary. Instead, we listen, imitate, speak, and then learn how to read and write. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more.
