For beginning students who don't come from a school program with a chosen book, I typically start with Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence or Rubank's Elementary Methods. Once students have gotten the basics down, I begin to introduce other types of books such as technique books, scale books, etudes, or even solo repertoire. Throughout the extent of my degree studies, my knowledge has only been extended through both study and application, having worked as an individual coach for a variety of age groups, as-well as having served as the Vocal Director for various productions at my institution. One of my main goals as a teacher is to get to know my student, how they best learn, and what it is they love about music. My own love for music and particular bands/genres is what gave me the drive to keep practicing, and I bring this same approach to each of my lessons. This will teach the ins and outs of how music works and how to apply it to any music you are approaching no matter the genre.
