I ensure that students understand the topics discussed, and do not proceed beyond until they obtain a genuine grasp and internalization. Music is a tool rather than a passion. That is also how I perceived piano playing when I learned piano in China. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Bastien Piano Basics or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
