My teaching experience has been for as long as I've been playing. Before studying any particular type of pedagogical approach, I've always had the gift and desire to share what I know with others. Formalized study has simply given me specific nomenclature for things.   I have been teaching and mentoring students for 7 years.  I hold a B.A. from Hampton University, a M.M. from Central Michigan University, and a North Carolina teaching license in instrumental music education.  I am currently a band director in Leland North Carolina. My teaching philosophy revolved around the idea that music should be fun and engaging. While many teachers start their students off by learning how to read music, I like to begin with actually playing and familiarizing yourself with the instrument and later translating that information to written music notation. In your first lesson, we will play the instrument and learn a simple tune based on your skill level. I am passionate about singing and about teaching others singing technique. I have my bachelor‘s degree in music from the University of Mount Olive. I also studied in the Masters program at ECU for vocal pedagogy. I’ve had leads in local operas and and I am also a vocal artist who sings gospel music along with other genres. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to accomplishing that wants and needs their wants and needs. Read More
