For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method One. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, including being able to read both staff and tab and have some basic playing technique , I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. I was born in Marshall, Texas. I received my Bachelor of Music and my Master of Fine Arts in Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. I've spent seven years in public schools in the surrounding Houston area before coming on to teach with KIPP Houston Public Schools in 2012. For beginning students, I always start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. I've found this book to be the best at introducing the instrument and reading the music. I may or may not continue teaching out of the books (there's 3), but that depends on the student. By book 2 or 3 I usually begin introducing Suzuki, as there are many solo pieces for them. These volumes are supplemented by exercises, which I write specifically for the particular student’s needs.
