If a student feels overwhelmed and/or uninterested in completing assignments and attending lessons, it can have the same affect as being assigned too much school work and house chores; the student will most likely lose interest in learning. I have been a professional musician for all of my adult life. Ive taught music privately since 1988. Many of my former students have become professional musicians. Over the last thirty-five years I have performed over a thousand shows in many facets as a professional pianist, guitarist, vocalist and arranger. I encourage each of them to advance by teaching them certain songs they love, have them listen to more piano music, and take them to piano concerts. I find that a mix of classic technique with something more modern such as pop, rock or jazz can ignite the inspiration to actually want to learn more of the complex yet essential aspects of music. My students are encouraged to compose their own music as well as collaborate with other students to create and share their work. My teaching lessons started back in high school, playing with the schools jam band. I'd give lessons for 20-30 minutes on scales, chords, circle of 5th and so on. After graduating high school, I moved to Los Angeles to continue musicianship. Giving private lessons in Hollywood I began to see the power of passing music along.
