I also won the 2018 Scruffy City Orchestra Concerto Competition and was chosen as a finalist in the University of Tennessee Concerto Competition in 2017, 2018, and 2019. For beginner guitar students I use Mel Bays You Can Teach Yourself guitar . I emphasize chords and technique and playing melodies. For piano students I teach students first to listen and immitate and then read. Once they master some basics in reading music I introduce chords. My vocal students start each lesson with warmups and apply the techniques to the songs that they are learning. Practice makes permanent. It doesn't always make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect, and therefore I encourage students to always make consistent time to practice and perfect their craft. Consistent practice with good technique and attention to detail is better than hours and hours of lazy, uninspired practice. Therefore, I try to set new challenges each week that are fresh and exciting which encourage active, perfect practice.
