Another method that I use in my lessons is deep listening. This includes finding many different ways to produce a variety of colors. I like to think that pianists’ fingers are “paint brushes” and there are million “painting techniques” that could be applied to paint sounds in different colors. I sometimes tell my students to try to visualize the shape and the color of the phrases or the sounds. For all of my beginning students I use the Suzuki method. I am a very fast paced teacher, and I hold all of my students to high standards. As my students get into more advanced music, I select solo literature that best fits their musical abilities. For my vocal students I select music that is appropriate for them from the very beginning. For my male vocal students, I coach them through the voice change, which is a rewarding experience for me.
