I use probably more of the Faber series than any other, but also use Bastien and Alfred piano books. I sometimes recommend all four,(Lesson, Theory, Tecnique, Performance) but often just use two - Lesson and Theory. Most kids can handle 3 songs a week, but sometimes only 2. I move methodically through the books, making sure they understand thoroughly an idea before moving too quickly ahead. I love helping my students set short- and long-term goals for themselves and instilling a practice log to achieve those goals! Each voice student has different goals for themselves - whether it's gaining the confidence to sing in their church choir or pave their path to stardom, I take these goals into account each moment of our time together. Every student is unique so I adjust my teaching style and methods/music taught to the needs of the student. I love the Suzuki Method for young students and adults alike. But I also refer to several fiddle methods including Craig Duncan's books, "American Fiddle Method" and "Kid Fiddle" for students who wish to learn fiddle tunes. For beginning students on violin we start with many techniques found in the Suzuki method. From there, we jump into different styles of music while still focusing on developing solid technical foundations for the student. Once we move into standard repertoire the lessons begin to change based on what the student needs. I am a firm believer in consistent practice. I would much rather have a student who practices daily for 15 minutes then a student who does not practice except for the day before their lesson for two hours. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I start with Rubank's Elementary Method book.  This will provide the student with the basic fundementals.  I will then introduce the student to a variety of solo repertoire for his or her instrument. I try to make my lessons as fun as possible so the child grows up with music as a fun, artistic outlet.  For students who already have knowledge on their instrument or who are adults, I aim to find what the student is interested in, and adjust my instruction accordingly.
