I attained my M. Ed. in leadership and supervision at Antioch University. There I learned how better apply my teaching methods for more beneficial outcomes.  My most recent employment, with Nashville Public Schools (Music City!!!), afforded me the opportunity to teach modern band. Modern band philosophy combines instruments from various ensembles and allows the students the opportunity to explore and integrate the instrument of their interest into that band.  Modern Band is basically a rock band that is opened to other instruments and ideas that are most times contradictory to a typical rock band. For beginner students I will utilize either the "Alfred's Basic Piano Library" or "Faber - Hal Leonard's Piano Adventures" with the particular books selected to fit the student's age and skill level. I also enhance lessons by integrating scale pattern practice as well as exploration with simple boogie-woogie bass patterns; encouragement to sing and play where the lessons provide such an arrangement; and tinkering creating very simple melody lines and lyrics. My methods and approach to teaching a student all depend on the student (or group of students). I like to find out what attracts my students to music, and more specifically, why they want to learn to play piano. By investigating the motives of my students, I can better tailor a lesson that delivers both what they want to learn and what they need to learn.
