For me, it is easier for me to hear a rhythm or melody while looking at it. It is easier for me to grasp and understand the rhythm and melody in terms of the context of the piece. Same with my teaching. I will always demonstrate a scale or rhythm or chord for a student before having the student attempt it by themselves. After we work through the example together, I will have them try playing it alone and if a particular area needs to be fixed I will address it, make sure the student understands, and move on from there. Instruments: Piano, Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, Ukulele
For the Clarinet, I typically use The Hendrickson Method book series with supplemental books on the side to enhance their various levels. I also encourage the students to bring music from their band class and/or other solos they may be working on for festivals, competitions, or auditions. Read More

I am enthusiastic about sharing all that I have learned with future students. I have given many different solo and collaborative performances all over the eastern United States. In the collaborative field, I have accompanied vocalists and instrumentalists. I have been the principal pianist in various orchestras and have performed piano in many different ensembles that championed traditional and contemporary works. I have also much experience in performing and studying jazz studies or popular music if this is where the student's interest lies. Read More
Instruments: Piano, Guitar, Violin, Banjo, Mandolin, Fiddle, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar
Depending on the instrument, I like to start working from a variety of traditional methods to get started. In the past, Ive preferred the Hal Leonard and Mel Bay series as a basis for learning piano, guitar, and banjo and for violin students- the Suzuki method (although I am not specifically a Suzuki teacher) followed by a prescribed series of etude books. Of course, this is helpful stuff for building a good, universal technical ability but I believe it is also important for a student to multi-task learning music that personally inspires them and that they can eventually perform with others.
