For beginners, I typically begin out of a method book, but I also use studies and etudes that I have developed on my own in the course of my teaching career. Throughout the learning process, I engage the student with real music to build listening skills, and teach concepts like tone, phrasing, and expression. For beginning cello students who are children, I typically start with Suzuki method elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I started teaching music at Werlein's for Music, which if are from New Orleans, and of a certain age, you will remember as being the premier music store in the Greater New Orleans area. I taught at Werlein's up until they closed their doors when they finally went out of business. However, when Bitsie Werlein opened the "Bitsie Werlein Piano Store" in Metairie, she chose me of all the instructors that taught at Werleins, to be the one and only Piano Instructor at her new store.
