I believe music is best learned like a second language. When we learn any language we first listen and then imitate what we hear. My approach is based on this principle. I start my beginner students with a series of examples to listen to, along with experiments to try. This approach is fun and we actually start playing music very quickly! Its very exciting!! Beginning piano students who are children will begin with the Faber and Faber lesson books which slowly progress the student through techinque and rhythmic exercises built into easy memorable songs. After building a strong base of fundementals I will the begin to introduce and teach songs the student wishes to learn alongside traditional literature to continue the technical progress. Therefore, I enjoy crafting a learning environment with each new student that meets them where they are and challenges them to grow in all areas of music. We need to develop technique, deepen expressive gestures, focus on phrasing and attention to musical detail and, of course, have fun!
