Learning should be fun for everyone! My main question to beginning students is: Why do you want to learn to play the piano? I believe keeping my lesson plans in line with a student's particular passion for music is the key to success. For younger students, I like to use the Leila Fletcher piano books, unless they (or their parents) express a preference for another lesson series. For adults, the lesson books I prefer to use, if any, will vary by what the student wants out of their piano lessons. Read More

During the first lesson, I get to know the student, find out their interests and determine which course will be the best start. The most important thing for all students is to keep the lessons engaging and fun. Piano: For younger beginning students, I typically start with the Alfred Basic Piano Library. I am a University of North Texas graduate. I studied with Jim Riggs and Dr. Eric Nestler and played in the top lab bands and classical ensembles while attending school. I later moved to NYC where I started my professional playing career. I lived there for 14 years playing with several music ensembles and studied with Bill Blount on clarinet and Lorrie Glaze on piano. I knew from an early age that I wanted music to be an integral part of my life. I began taking piano lessons at age 8, and pipe organ lessons at age 15, from my church's Minister of Music. I spent my school years playing for weddings, recitals, competitions, church services, community theater events, and of course, for my own enjoyment! I was inducted into Mu Phi Epsilon (a professional fraternity) in my senior year of college, and had the privilege of being a featured piano soloist with my college-community orchestra that same year. Most of my instruction experience has been on-the-job teaching of my professional associates and bandmates as a Musical Director and bandmate. I have occasionally taught lessons during brief stints off of the road, but playing on the road has been my primary job for most of my adult life. Teaching, learning, practice and rehearsal have played a major role in my day-to-day life.
