As a teacher, I am always wanting to see my students enjoy what is happening in the music. I have wide spectrum of students that I have taught. Some have wanted to play an instrument casually and others wanted to go into the performance route. I am flexible when it comes to my teaching. If a student wants a more serious lesson setting, I can give that to them. If a student is feeling overwhelmed by the lesson load, I can change that as well. Read More

As a musician myself, I enjoy the cooperative element of music so I readily have an instrument around that I can play along with the student to help further innate musicianship for all skill levels of instrumentalists. For beginners I enjoy using Standards of Excellence from Kjos publishing or Sound Innovations from Alfred publishing and custom tailor exercises to fit the strengths and challenges of every student I teach. As the students progress, I can introduce solo exercises that fit the skill level of the musician and help to guide the students through the multi-faceted world of music. Read More

Anyone can learn to play scales and technically difficult pieces but cultivating creativity and musicianship is the key to developing an understanding of phrasing, purpose, and musicianship. I'm not going to be just sitting around telling my student what to do and how to do it. I want my students to think for themselves and delight that the work they produce is their own. Read More

I take a very detailed and analytical approach to music performance, and this is reflected in my teaching. I believe many students look at a piece of music that seems too difficult and become too overwhelmed to realize that's it's not as difficult as it may first appear. By breaking down music into its components, pitch, rhythm, dynamic, articulation, etc., and tackling each item one at a time, students who thought of music as a strange and foreign language begin to see it as something that just works and makes sense. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 40 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 20 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy their instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
