The first lesson is often very relaxed and focused on the student's learning style. I will then start with one of the many beginner books that I feel will suit the student. Often that depends on the age, experience, and knowledge. I want the music to push the boundaries, but not too difficult. My students will focus on slow, steady, and consistent practice schedules. In 2007, I graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. I was a member of the Penn State Marching Blue Band and have participated in several Alumni Blue Band performances since graduating. I went on to earn my Masters of Music in Music Education from Northwestern University in 2012. I enjoyed teaching music in the public school for ten years. I like to begin all my students on a combination of technical studies and enjoyable/familiar melodies. This will help them learn the fundamentals in a rewarding way, because as they progress they will continue to learn new songs week after week. This is much more rewarding than checking of series of technical exercises. Additionally it is important to have both small goals to achieve each week and large goals to achieve over a number of months, so my students can be aware and proud of their progress over time. I like to see what the student is currently working on, interested in, or what the school district encourages.   I am open to student / parent wishes; I understand that while some student goals are to find a career with music, there are many who are looking to grow within a hobby!
