The art form of music is both a cerebral and deepy visceral experience. And thus so I invite students to journey outward and inward to begin (or continue) studying music from both a scholastic perspective as well as treating the art form as a purely aural experience. I am new as a teacher, but am up for the challenge and opportunity to work with and inspire students to find their own self-expression as well as learn practical skills to help them reach their musical goals. Consistent practice is a key point, but more importantly pairing technical skills with music a student enjoys playing helps ensure a desire to keep learning and progressing. I cater my teaching and methods to each individual student and his/her needs and goals. For beginners, I often use Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. After progressing past that, the Rubank books and Hite etudes work for many students. Starting around 8th grade, I introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their level. During lessons, I always have students work on some form of scale, sight-reading, and ear training. I have several duet books (and a Disney book!) that students love to sight-read from. Read More

I like to begin all my students on a combination of technical studies and enjoyable/familiar melodies. This will help them learn the fundamentals in a rewarding way, because as they progress they will continue to learn new songs week after week. This is much more rewarding than checking of series of technical exercises. Additionally it is important to have both small goals to achieve each week and large goals to achieve over a number of months, so my students can be aware and proud of their progress over time.
