I have found that most students in my original area who learned saxophone were taught in various ways that brought up issues later on in their musical career. I focus on fingering exercises and scales for beginners to ease the hardships brought up later and introduce options. Then, we begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their level. The lessons are set up to maintain a balance between fun (to keep them encouraged) and necessary exercises to build the foundations that will excel them to the next level. When working in private lessons, I work with each student to set goals, both long and short term. I then assume the role of a guide whenever possible, rather than an authoritarian figure, so that sudents can discover concepts for themselves vs. having the information given to them. In 1994 I graduated with my Bachelors in Music Education from Syracuse University, and continued my studies with a Masters of Science in Music Education and Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation.
