For beginning students, I teach the Rubank Method. For intermediate and advanced students, I teach the Frost School Jazz Method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I started teaching in 2009 in Mississippi. I taught 6th grade band (beginner), 7th grade band, and high school. I taught in Mississippi for 5 years and just recently moved to Tennessee. While teaching, I've given private lessons to some of my students after school and to some students who did not attend my school. I always encourage doing a recital, entering competitions, and continuing on to college playing their instrument. I love motivating students and challenging them to be the best and nothing less. I tend to work with students on a one-on-one basis. I start by showing the student how to get a sound out of their instrument, and then I lead a student through their first scales. I almost always play the piece or scale first, as I have found learning to read music is far easier to learn when the student already has an idea how the music should sound before they try to play the piece. I like to structure my lessons to cover three main areas of saxophone playing: tone development, fundamental technique, and musical interpretation through repertoire. I like to get to know my students, and in this way create an individualized learning plan based on their needs and interests. I believe it is important to create a learning environment where the student succeeds and enjoys making music.
