Overview:
I am a well-rounded flutist who is passionate about teaching others to be passionate about their craft. I have two master level degrees in flute performance with a lot of performance and teaching experience. I was a graduate assistant to the flute studio at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which required to to teach lessons, teach music theory, and World Music. At the University of Memphis, I served as a teaching assistant to the Music Theory department teaching aural theory courses. I have also participated in many local orchestras in Memphis, Tennessee, and Lafayette, Louisiana.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching lessons during my final years of my undergraduate degree. Throughout the years, I have maintained a studio in each city. During my master's degree at University of Louisiana, I was a teacher of record for a woodwind technique course, which focused on scales and supplementary lessons to the student's lesson with the flute professor. At the University of Memphis, I taught supplementary lessons as well as music theory courses. I have also served as section leader in ensembles and other leadership roles throughout ensembles and departments.
METHODS USED
I like to start beginning students with the Rubank Elementary series of books. Along with the Rubank books, I like to also focus on music being covered in school, if applicable. For more advanced students, I focus on the mastery of scales, technique, intonation, and sound production. I like to use the Andersen etude series, but this will vary from student to student. With adult students, the material covered is completely individual. I love to work with each person's interests and unique interests.
LESSON STYLE
I like to keep hours at an hour, but I understand every student has different needs. Every lesson will begin with a warmup and the understanding of sound production. I like to look at the physical and mental aspects of what produces sound. After sound, it is crucial to work on scales-- as scales are the foundation to all music. After scales, I like to spend time of technique and etudes. After this, I will focus on the students needs. I like to work in a relaxed atmosphere. I believe a relaxed, laid back atmosphere will create positive, good habits in a students playing.
