I am a musician with 16 years plus of music experience. My main instrument is guitar but I have learned many other instruments over the years such as piano, bass guitar, banjo, and drums. I learned to read music in high school band as an auxiliary percussionist (playing bells, xylophone, and various percussion instruments) as well as singing in the choir. I have done professional studio work since 2013 with many different artists in plenty of genres including rock, country, hip hop, and jazz. I am currently a full time musician with a huge love for the art as well as spreading the knowledge to anyone who will listen!
My entire life has been full of music. I have close family members on both my mother's and father's side that played music extensively through their lives. I began playing drums at the age of 10 and three years later picked up guitar. Since then, I learned to read music and taught myself how to play piano, banjo, mandolin, bass guitar, and a very small pinch of the violin. It is my intention to bring to light the joys and possibilities of learning music. I believe there is always more to learn with whatever instrument you choose whether it be deeper music theory or just innovative uses and methods. I believe if you ever stop learning, you should move to something else!
For any beginner musician, I find it is very important to have a general idea of the most basic level of theory. A student should know how the notes relate to each other and why. Strict rules and "know-how" are important, but music is expressive and creative. If you want to build a bridge, you should build your bridge to be the unique image you choose; however, you need to know which tools to use to get started. Once, the grunt work is laid, I will lead the student into a field that he or she is most interested in. I do not believe a student should initially invest too heavily in a style he or she has no interest! That takes all of the fun out!
The love of music develops differently in each person. Because I have found that most "creatives" are fairly emotionally driven, I believe it is of the utmost importance to retain a sense of encouragement at every milestone no matter how small. I like to stay positive, helpful, and personal. If a student is struggling with a particular aspect, I will work with him or her to figure out the root, assess the situation, and solve the problem as efficiently as possible. I believe that no two students learn exactly the same way; therefore I tailor my teaching style as best as I can to each student.
