Overview:
I am an enthusiastic music teacher and musician who has taught hundreds of private students, college classes at UCSD, and elementary school classes with Afterschool Entichment Solutions. In addition to general music education, I teach guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, double bass, piano, vocals, music theory, ear training, and notation to students of all ages. I have been teaching since I was 16 years old, and became very devoted to teaching after I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Music from Penn State. I often see that my students are able to find both enjoyment and enlightenment through music. This is accomplished by having a base in traditional style of music education, while also incorporating fun and relatable topics. I also see them develop a sense of confidence because of their ability to understand a subject that they may not have had much familiarity with before. On the performing side, I play those same instruments in a wide range of ensembles. I play rock, jazz, classical, pop, folk, country, and funk. I have toured many parts of the country multiple times with rock bands, and have also performed with orchestras at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Heinz Hall. I have also recorded on lots of projects and have played on records produced by Ron Blair from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Pete Steinkopf from The Bouncing Souls. In 2021 I was nominated for a San Diego Music Award for Best Jazz Album. Thank you for your consideration.

METHODS USED
My lesson plans are devised around each student's individual goals. Do you have a favorite musician that you want to sound like? Is there an ensemble that you are dying to play in? Through a combination of effective methods and specific structuring to your needs, I can help you achieve those goals! For double bass, I find F. Simandl's "New Method for the Double Bass" and "30 Etudes for the String Bass" to be extremely useful. For bass guitar, I like to teach with "Hal Leonard Bass Method." For guitar, I use "Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method." On occasion, I have had students who learn more effectively without method books and I have no problem constructing a lesson plan to meet those particular preferences.
LESSON STYLE
I want to show you that music can be the most exciting and enriching experience in your life! The best way for a student to grow and succeed as a musician is to enjoy playing. There is an enormous amount of practice that comes with learning an instrument, but if you become passionate about playing, then the urge to practice will come naturally. We will work together to establish a long term goal. With that in mind, each week I will help you take a step in the right direction and you will definitely notice the progress.
