Overview:
My name is Aaron; I am a teacher and performer, based in the Metro-Detroit area. I am currently a graduate bass trombone student at the University of Michigan, studying with Dr. David Jackson. This past summer, I was chosen as one of three finalists in the International Trombone Association's Donald Yaxley Solo Bass Trombone Competition. My primary teachers include Steve Wolfinbarger and David Jackson, and I have also taken lessons and performed masterclasses with Jeremy Wilson, Massimo LaRosa, Nick Schwartz, Ken Thompkins, Evan Conroy, and Randy Hawes. Aside from performing and teaching trombone, I really enjoy repairing and tinkering with brass instruments, and love arranging music.
EXPERIENCE
At the age of ten, I began my musical adventures with a trombone in my hand. During my primary school days, I was active in music, picking up a number of different instruments, and playing in every ensemble imaginable- from symphony band to brass quintet to big band. After high school I traveled to Western Michigan University, where I began studying bass trombone full time, under the tutelage of Dr. Steve Wolfinbarger. Professor Wolfinbarger is one of the world's finest trombonists, not to mention a great mentor and friend. Over the past few years of studying at WMU, I have learned a great deal about trombone from Professor Wolfinbarger, and share many of his great teaching philosophies.
METHODS USED
Depending on the skill level of the student, there are a number of different method books, solo literature, orchestral and band excerpts, and tools that I employ. Each student will need to purchase a metronome and tuner (the Korg brand tuner-metronome works great!), and come to each lesson prepared, and with a pencil!
LESSON STYLE
I place emphasis on helping each student strengthen fundamentals, thus helping them achieve a phsysiologically healthy approach to playing. With these concepts under way, I will help the student develop their own unique interpretive skills and apply them to their individial interests in music. Above all, my goal is to help students to become musicians first, and trombonists second.
