Overview:
I have been involved in music for as long as I can remember, singing in church choirs and leading contemporary worship. I graduated from McMurry University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance in 2004. Having decided that performing was not my #1 passion I then pursued a Masters of Music degree, specializing in Music Therapy, from Colorado State Univeristy. I have been a professional music therapist for the past 9 years, working with children and adolescents with developmental disabilities as well as mental health populations.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching music lessons as a music therapist since 2007 and have much experience with adapted lessons for students with developmental disabilities and other limitations. I started teaching typical lessons in addition to adapted lessons in 2013 and it has been an added joy for me. I love teaching basic music lessons and music theory to children developing strong musical roots. I encourage a regular practice schedule for all of my students to help develop strong habits and engraving music in each of their lives.
METHODS USED
I believe in a hands on approach. Although I do use books to help reinforce and practice music concepts, I find that children learn through doing, so I use a hand over hand approach. I believe that one does not learn unless one wants to learn and therefore see myself less as a teacher and moreso a creator of an environment in which the student is able to teach themselves. I prefer to use the Bastien Piano Basics books in my lessons, however if a child has had experiences and prefers a different method I am willing to work with that method as well.
LESSON STYLE
Each student learns at their own pace, therefore goals are set individually for each student. Students need to have a passion for learning music, therefore I try to create a fun, patient environment in order for children to learn. I believe in setting goals and acknowledging when an accomplishment is made to reinforce the desire to learn. Regular practice is encouraged and incentivized if needed because practice is a necessary habit in learning and furthering development. I also encourage students to think about music they want to learn and work towards theirritated own personal goals.
