I have been playing viola for seven years and violin for nine years. I have worked with students that are in middle school up to high school. In high school, I played with the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra in Michigan. Then I played with the Saint Mary's College String ensemble and the Notre Dame Symphony Orchestra, and went on tour with the NDSO, for a year. I graduated high school in 2017, went to Saint Mary's College at Notre Dame, IN, and I am now at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, WA. I am working towards my music education degree.
My teaching experience is probably not as great as others, but I am working towards it being something fantastic! I started teaching students in my Junior year of high school. They were sixth graders, and I would occasionally work with seventh and eighth graders. In my senior year, I was working with all three grades of middle schoolers and I was working with high schoolers, and giving lessons. My orchestra teacher was always trying to talk me out of being a music teacher but I couldn't. I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life because every morning I would wake up and that was the first thing I thought of. When I teach, I feel like myself and I feel like I belong.
I start by teaching the basic theory method, especially for beginners. After the basic theory, I start working with rhythms and slowly bring in pieces from the Suzuki books, for strings. Most of my teaching is from the various levels of Suzuki books and Kreutzer Etudes. There are some exercises that my orchestra teacher created that I use from him. The big thing I teach is intonation and technique. For vocalists, it is whatever they are interested in and then working with vocal technique. I try to keep the lessons fun and engaging but also challenging so they can increase their abilities while still having fun.
I approach teaching the same way I have been taught. By learning at my own pace and by setting realistic goals that can be met but also keep me challenged. I work with students that way because it can be tailored to any type or level of a student. I also keep in mind what the students are interested in. If they are having fun, it makes meeting those goals easier. I push the students to their full potential, but still, keep in mind their needs and interests. Watching students' love and passion for music develop is one of the most rewarding things ever.
