BM, Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of the Arts, Drum Set Performance
Overview:
Looking for a fresh, new approach to drums? Whether you have been playing for a while or you're just picking up sticks today, I can help you achieve the next level in your music. I started playing in my fathers church at 13 and by middle school I was signed up for every ensemble my school had to offer. In high school, I won several awards at jazz band competitions and was fortunate enough to recieve scholarships to help pursue music as a career. It was at Rutgers University, where I was able to cultivate my style and approach under the direction of jazz legend Victor Legend.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to showing simple rock grooves to the kids at my fathers church. I had very little knowledge about music back then but I knew from early on that I had a niche for teaching. During my time at Rutgers University I was priveleged enough to work for the Rutgers Extension Division which specializes in different lesson and summer programs. Through the Extension Division I was able to gain experience as a counselor, working with children ages 6-18, and also as a substitute drum instuctor. Upon graduating in 2013, I immediataly began working for multiple studios as a private instructor.
METHODS USED
For beginners, I have a special system that implements coordination while utilizing proper counting technique. As their understanding of their limbs grows the more I begin to welcome actual musical notation. This system has proven time and time again to tackle the initial issue that coordination imposes. In intermediate to advanced students I stress the importance of technique, quality of sound, coordination, visualization, and relaxation/movement. I also stress the importance of sightreading and practice this with many of my students.
LESSON STYLE
Patience. I have taught children as young as 5 to adults nearing their 50's and the one universal approach I take with all of them is taking every day as a step forward. I am never aggressive with my students. I believe in pushing them to the next level but never through negativity. I stress the importance of enjoying other activities in school/life and seeing them as important factors in our growth as musicians. I always tell my students to put 20-30 minutes of focused practice 4-5 times a week, as well as understanding the lineage of drummers through listening to different genres and styles.
