BA Music Education
MAE in Educaiton (2022)
A graduate of California State University Fullerton's School of Music. I am a music educator with over 20 years experience in the classroom, studio,or as a coach. I have taught music at Elementary, Middle and High School. I have given lessons on various instruments from trumpet, trombone, tuba, saxophone, clarinet and flute, I have also been a guitar and bass player for over 20 years as well. I have played in rock bands, jazz bands and salsa bands. I have performed with ensembles at Cerritos College, Fullerton College, University of Southern California, La Sierra University and Cal State University Fullerton.
My teaching experience goes back to my high school days. I was lead trumpet in all my ensembles. A parent asked me if I could teach her son to do what I was doing. I reluctantly accepted after some prodding on her part. At this point in my life I was already heading to a career in Music Education and studying privately myself. I continued teaching trumpet, tuba and bass guitar all through High School. While in High School I taught and after school Tuba class. In college I taught a brass class once a week at my former middle school. My students have gone on to be accepted to honor bands, rose parade honor band and University music programs.
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Rubanks Method for their instrument. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce instrument specific work from various time tested method books, solo repertoire appropriate for any auditions they may be interested. For adults, I use the same basic method while using their musical interest to engage them in their lessons and practice and guide them to where they need to be on their musical journey.
There is nothing more rewarding and paramount in my teaching style than being on the sidelines as one of my students develops a passion for music! Do to this it is my goal that each student sets goals for themselves with my guidance that allow them to progress at his or her own pace. My job as their mentor is to fuel a young musicians desire to grow as a musician. Teaching them to harness their curiosity and helping them to discover what they are searching for in music is how I engage them in their learning.
