I have played and taught music professionally for over 20 years. I have played a remarkably diverse range of gigs ranging from symphony orchestras to jazz to top 40 to folk music. My focus as a musician is the American popular song from its origin at the turn of the 20th century to the most contemporary pop hit. I have arranged many popular songs for various groups and have a strong passion for music notation.
I began teaching bass lessons when I was in high school. I taught bass for 11 years as an adjunct instructor at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. I also worked as a clinician at the UAB Jazz Summit. Many of my students have gone on to play professionally and a few have gone on to become music teachers themselves. The most important aspect to teaching in my opinion is to make sure that the students remain engaged and excited enough to spend the time that will make them successful.
My approach to teaching music is essentially a synthesis of my formal music education and a distillation of what I have learned from my experiences gigging. While a fluency with music notation is a great benefit and a necessity for some styles, a bassist will not work without the ability to make the music feel good. This feel can only be achieved through developing one's sensitivities to pitch and time. This is best achieved through transcription of examples of the style chosen for study.
Students progress is largely a function of time spent working toward their goals. I have heard it said that in order to become an expert at anything, one must only spend 10,000 hours doing it. This is roughly 40 hours a week for 10 years. Bass is no different. In order for students to spend this ridiculous amount of time on something, they must be excited about it. If it is something that they choose for themselves, they will be.
