BA, Young Harris College, Guitar Performance
I graduated from Young Harris College in 2012 with a B. A. in Classical Guitar Performance. Despite this, I still play with a pick most of the time. I began playing the guitar just before I turned 16 and have been obsessed with it ever since. My teaching studio/office is in the bottom floor of the house I live in.
I began helping and tutoring fellow guitar students way back in high school. If they were having rhythm problems or trouble figuring out a chord progression, I could usually help. I taught a bit in college. I was the music theory tutor for a while, and I also took a guitar pedagogy class that involved taking on students. I have taught a bit here and there in the last couple of years since college. I do enjoy teaching and hope to be doing much more of it in the coming years.
The approach I feel works best for teaching students how to play guitar, is to try to create a positive feedback loop. This can be created by finding music that the student likes and that challenges them, but isn't overly difficult to the point that they have to slog through it for months to get anywhere. I also emphasize the point of getting the guitar into their hands everyday. It helps a lot hack away at it as much as possible.
My teaching approach is to base all of my lessons on each student's individual musical tastes and goals. So if a student is interested in building speed, we'll work on alternate picking exercises, or right hand patterns for classical and fingerstyle students. If the student is more interested in rhythm guitar, we'll work on that. And throughout, we'll focus on music of the student's choosing.
