I began playing drums in the school band in 1987 at the age of 10 in the Pittsburgh, PA area. I took a strong interest in music throughout school and played in the marching band and concert band through to graduation. I played in a rock band with my brother until 1997. I majored in classical performance in college and eventually obtained a master's degree in that field by the age of 24. I performed in various symphony orchestras for more than a decade. I recently completed a four year stint traveling the world on cruise ships where I eventually met my wife and decided to "settle down" in Nashville, TN early in 2014. I teach from our house in Goodlettsville.
I have always had a passion for teaching having worked as a private instructor and marching band instructor throughout my 20's and into my early 30's. I am certified to teach in the public schools. I have taught as a full time band director in the states of Tennessee and Ohio. I also worked as a part time band director in the Pittsburgh Catholic Schools. I am currently interviewing for full time positions in the state of Tennessee. My teaching does not cut corners. I often tell young students to watch the movie "Karate Kid" and play close attention to the "Wax on, wax off" scenes. (Fortunately, there are practice supplements using play along tracks that make this process more fun and less tedious). I not teach "songs", but I do teach the language of drumming and the language of music. I am an advanced reader and all of my students will be required to read at least some music, however I do understand that many students learn by ear.
Many self taught drummers learn bad habits which become very difficult to break as they get older. We will break these habits if needed. For the beginner, we will spend the first two or three lessons working on proper grip and motion. Once that is mastered, we will use the Maroni book and use the first page of Stick Control. I would like to supplement that with a John Wooton play along book which takes the boredom out of Stick Control. Once we get into drum set, we will use the Tommy Igoe "Groove Essentials" series which is outstanding. I also like to use Beatles songs as beginner play along tracks. From there we will get into Latin and jazz styles. The ultimate goal is for the student to out play me.
I want my students to be successful. I will give them to tools to need to learn to language of music. I will direct them to the materials to help them with that goal. When I was a kid I remember walking out of teacher's studio feeling like a stronger drummer than I did the previous week. I want my students to have that same feeling of accomplishment. I acknowledge students' growth and realize that everyone moves at their own pace. If students are not practicing, I want to know why and fix that problem so that the lessons do not become frustrating for everyone. I offer more than the average Nashville honky tonk musician. Please contact me if you think drum lessons are right for you or your child.
