I’ve been playing Guitar and Singing since I was 9 years old. Almost all of this was self-taught until I attended Columbia for Music theory and Composition after high school. There, I was ranked the top rated guitarist on fret-board jury for two semesters in a row, I was an examplary student and began my journey towards becoming and an accomplished pianist. Starting at the age of 12, I founded my first band and have played in a variety of original and cover bands ever since. Included in these experiences was Chicagoland regular rotation play on XRT's local music showcase and an interview on the Flabby Hoffman Show. While attending UIC I even dabbled in theatre, and though I I had little to no experiece as an actor, I achieved a lead role in three out of the four productions I was cast in. Of these four, two were rock musicals, including the Who's "Tommy." As you can see, my whole life is music. I love to teach, perform and compose music. Although I love all these elements of music, I would have to say that my greatest joy comes from seeing my students progress towards becoming accomplished musicians. Whatever your goals may be, I take great pride in helping you attain them.
My experience as an educator began when I was a junior in High School, where I fast gained a reputation as an exceptional guitarist/singer. During this time, a few of my friends and classmates asked me if I would teach them. Since then, I have been teaching non-stop out of my residence and other creditable music stores. From 2008-2010, I taught out of Avenue N. Guitars, while keeping my own private students. From 2010-2012, I taught out of the House of Music in Orland Park, while also keeping my own private students. Currenlty, I am only teaching through creditable web-music-lesson companies for in home or out of my studio instuction. Outside of my education experience, I also have real life experience as a performer, the greatest educator of all. I have been performing in bands since I was 12 years of age, which is currently over 20 years of live performance experience. During this time I have played various styles of music including, Rock, Psychedelic, Punk, Reggae, Ska, Metal, Blues, Jazz, Classical and a current blend that utilizes many of these forms.
I believe in providing a well rounded education for you or your child. My approach entails a 50/50 split between doing the hard work necessary to excel and learning to enjoy music. Therefore, their will be and allotment of standard scales, chords, sight-reading and music theory education. However, one must also learn how to use these elements to find there own stylized expression, creative abilities and improvisational voice, which I believe to be necessary if one is to really enjoy music. Although all of these elements seem necessary to me, I do understand that everyone has their own particular agenda. Therefore, I curtail my curriculum to accommodate the goals and abilities of my students.
Philosophy on Music- There is imitation and creation, but to truly create one must first learn the established forms before one can break them. Eventually through discipline to these forms, one will see these forms not as absolutes governors, but instead a variety of tools that aid us in our artistic expression and enjoyment. Philosophy as an Educator- To be an effective educator I believe that one must not only create a curriculum and pay attention to the individual needs of their students, but one must also provide an environment that fosters growth. That is why I am a firm believer in being extremely kind, providing positive feedback and maintaining a safe environment.
