Over 20 years experience as a professional musician.
I am a passionate and motived piano instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I have been in full time ministry playing for gospel choirs and contemporary worship band for over 20 years. I have been teaching students to play for church my entire ministry. My focus is teaching by ear and coaching students to play with a band in worship service. Playing for many worship bands and styles I learned how to adjust for different types of music. I offer one hour one-on-one teaching instructions. Along with exposing musicians to local musicians in the area.
My teaching experience dates back to my early ministry days. I begin teaching private lessons part time while I was a music instructor at a charter school and full time ministry leading choir. Many of my students have gone on the collage with a music scholarship and are now leading full time in churches. I found that teaching students to study the style of music they are playing will go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to network with other musicians and learn from each other. My students are encouraged to be creative and develop their own style.
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with sight reading with kid friendly curriculum. Once students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin with the "Playing Piano by Ear" 20 lesson curriculum. For adults, I try to find out where the student is in knowledge and how advanced they are, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My ultimate goal is the focus on ear-training, theory, and to be able to play with a band when they are completed. Advanced student will learn practical techniques to enhance their playing experience.
Nothing is more rewarding then seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it is important that each student progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailer my instruction to their wants and needs. I continue to encourage my students to be creative and develop their own style. They are also encouraged to network and learn from other musicians.
