I'm a passionate teacher that is as excited to teach you guitar as I am to get to know you. I studied jazz guitar with renowned jazz guitarist Jimmy Bruno at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I started teaching guitar while in college and have taught guitar to students of all ages and skill levels for 4 years. I have been playing guitar for 25 years and grew up listening to and inspired by classic rock like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix. I love playing modern rock as well and also jazz.
My teaching experience goes back to my college days when I was teaching guitar at a local guitar store in Philadelphia. I have since taught several years in students homes. I like teaching students of all skill levels from very beginners to advanced level guitarists. I believe learning guitar should be fun and I accomplish this by teaching each student how to play their favorite songs along with some basic technique and music theory. Regular practice is key, regardless of amount of time available. Keep practice fun by consistent improvement, learning songs and improvising, and not putting undue pressure on yourself. Guitar should be an escape and a joyful activity.
For beginners I start by teaching basic chords and teaching notes on the neck and how to read music using Hal Leonard or Mel Bay books. Using these basic ideas students can begin learning many of their favorite sons quickly. For intermediate students I teach music theory, including chord theory, scales, and improvisation techniques. Advanced students are taught jazz chords, songs, more advanced scales and arpeggios, and more difficult improvisation techniques. You are also taught more advanced technical skills.
I am extremely patient and I like students to enjoy lessons and have fun getting better at guitar. Regular practice is key, and the only way to play regularly is to enjoy it. I will tailor lessons to your goals. It is important to learn how to play your favorite songs in order to feel a sense of accomplishment which will motivate students to continue practicing and wanting to continue advancing. Regular practice helps create muscle memory where your hands can more readily play chords, learn phrases, and seemingly help you play many things with much less concentration, almost as if your hands are working without you controlling them!
