I had a great guitar teacher myself when I was first learning and so I have always known how important it is to get started correctly. I graduated with a degree in fingerstyle guitar performance and so I know how to perform and teach numerous acoustic guitar styles but I can still plug in the electric guitar and have fun rocking out. Music is an endlessy enriching activity that will bless people's lives forever and I love to help people discover what the guitar has to offer them.
I began teaching lessons out of my home thirteen or fourteen years ago. Most of my students come to my home where I have a deep print and video library which I can use to pick the right repertoire for each student. I truly believe that half of my job is simply convincing the student that he or she can do this! A little success goes a long way toward inspiring more practice and desire to learn.
For young beginners, I usually start with simple note reading so that they can begin playing tunes right away. When children realize that they can play "Happy Birthday" or "Jingle Bells" after just a couple of lessons, their interest level increases. For older students, I tend to ask "What does playing the guitar look like to you? What do you imagine yourself doing when you ponder it?" This gives me the best idea of what direction we can plan for.
I try to be as laid-back and disarming as possible. Ultimately, playing music is supposed to be fun and so I never want to stop communicating that to students of any age. I have a lot of students who have been with me for years and I believe that speaks to my ability to connect with them on a musical and personal level and make lessons fun but always productive. My expectations are clear each week but my goal is to instill the desire in each student to want to do their best because music is worth it.
Adam is very knowledgeable, and I feel he has significantly helped with my sons knowledge of music and guitar playing skills. He maintains a professional yet fun atmosphere at every lesson. We couldn't be more satisfied with our experience.
