Hi! I am a full time middle school teacher based in Annapolis.
I love working with children and families. In my free time, I teach, compose, and perform music in the Maryland/DC area.
I've also had the opportunity to perform internationally (Spain, China, Argentina). I am trained in drums and guitar. When I'm not playing music, I'm listening to it :) I have strong communication skills and am responsible. I am great with connecting with kids and finding a personalized way to teach them that suits their individual learning style.
I have 15+ years experience as a drummer, guitarist, and song writer. I love teaching and I love music, so it's a joy to mix them together. I began teaching music when I was in high school. I stuck with it through college and into my 20's because it's a great way to connect with families in my community. In addition to teaching music, I play in a band as well as perform solo. I'm always looking to share music with others. Being a strong school teacher helps me be strong music teacher, and vice versa!
For beginners, it's important to carefully approach the basic skills so it's fun and not discouraging. For intermediate and advanced students, we hit the ground running and build on skills already developed while filling in any gaps too. Here's an example of how I structure a 60 minute drum lesson: warm up, technique drills, drum beat practice, song study, jam session Here's an example of how I structure a 60 minute guitar/bass lesson: warm up, technique drills, chords/composition practice, song study, jam session
Regardless of level, we work hard and have fun. I have high expectations but also patience with meeting you at your level and making it comfortable to progress! I believe that exposure to a diversity of musical styles best supports students in developing their skills and appreciation for all music. Technique is just as important as creativity. We practice both. With this in mind, I sometimes will listen to you play, and other times I will accompany you with percussion, drums, or guitar. Practicing on your own in between lessons is important for development and getting the most out of our lessons. I can help with motivation and accountability systems!
