Associate Degree: Diablo Valley College
I have been playing guitar for over 10 years and would like to share my knowledge with the world. Currently I am attending Cal State East Bay as a jazz guitar major, and have an music associates degree at Diablo Valley College. Having been taught privately since I was a kid, I would like to improve upon different teaching methods that I wish were taught to me including music theory and improvisation skills. Currently, I am not in any bands at the moment, but have played in many throughout the years ranging in genres from hardcore to pop punk. I also have plenty knowledge in music production and am in contact with many promoters in the Bay Area if you'd like your band to play a show.
I have been teaching guitar to friends and family for the past 3-4 years, including several of my cousins and my brother. Their skill ranged from beginner to intermediate and I found that each person is different and requires different needs when it comes to guitar. There is many different aspects to teaching that I am familiar with and the most important one I've found most important is listening and patience. What I find most fulfilling in teaching is seeing improvement to concepts that may be challenging to understand.
My methods for teaching are very adaptive depending on your experience, skill level, and what you'd like to learn. For beginner students, I usually go over basic knowledge of the guitar and a bit of music theory, and guitar finger exercises. For students more interested in playing songs, I will aid them in reading guitar tabs and also how to set up an amplifier to achieve the right tones, i.e. reverb, distortion. For intermediate students, I like to go over more interesting concepts like chord shapes and scales that correspond to the genre of choice, ranging from punk rock music, metal, and jazz.
My teaching style is tailored to however the student learns best. I am very adaptive to the student's focus and will constantly check to see if the current topic we're going over makes sense or if they'd like to move on to something else. I also believe that positive reinforcement is very important and that one should always think positively about every accomplishment big or small. My philosophy is that you are only competing against yourself and that if you are better than you were yesterday, then it is a success.
