After graduating from Hofstra University in 2014, I have had the opportunity to work in regional theatre and recording in and out of NY. I am currently an EMC working towards getting my Actors Equity union membership. I have the honor of having Broadway star Robert Cuccioli as a musical theatre acting coach, as well as renowned musical theatre coach Stephen Purdy. In addition to continuing my career as a performer, I have also enjoyed the gift of teaching voice to Broadway star Jake Katzman, of the Broadway production of Kinky Boots. I love working with people to help them achieve their goals, and I especially love working with young people, as I have had many wonderful experiences with teaching and performing for children. I believe that having a teacher by your side to help one gain confidence and knowledge in the area they study can guide them in the path of reaching their dreams. I also believe strongly in positive reinforcement and a relaxed fun atmosphere!
EXPERIENCE
I have previously taught piano and voice to children when I was in high school. In college, I worked with Tammy Hensrud and Craig Schulman (who has starred in Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera). In turn, I gave voice lessons to fellow students within my drama program who wanted to further develop their singing techniques. I am currently the voice teacher of Jake Katzman, who is in the Broadway production of Kinky Boots. I continue to further my own studies with a marvelous teacher, Lauren Athey-Janka. I take much of her own teachings to incorporate it into my style. A big motto of hers is "Let me do the thinking for you!" Greater advice can not be given to a singer. If the work is put in, the trust must accompany it. Then, the singer's job is just to sing and trust! The teacher will adjust, rework, and advise!
METHODS USED
As with most of my own studies, I try to adhere to the classical style of training. I will also adjust as to the student's individual needs. Of course with everyone, we will increase vocal range and experiment with what areas of style need more work than others, for example some may need to work harder at belting than head voice, and so on. The most important things in my opinion are warmup techniques, breath support, examining correct space, finding the lift in the soft palate, and letting go of any tension, especially in the jaw area, as it is not a part of the process!
LESSON STYLE
Again, my teaching will stick to the motto of my own voice teacher, "Let me do the thinking for you!" If we work on it in lessons, and the student works on it in practice, the next step is to let go and trust that they've done the work and I will adjust if needed. The most important thing is for the student to feel comfortable and sing with no effort or push! Also, positive reinforcement is key. A relaxed and stress-free environment is essential for me to do my own work, so why shouldn't it be that way for others!
