I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I graduated from Temple University in 1988, with a Master's of Music degree in the area of Percussion Performance, and Jazz emphasis. During my career at Temple I had the opportunity play with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and at various venues including in New York at Carnegie Hall, as an example. I obtained my NJ Teacher Certification for the grades of K-12 in 2004, from Rowan University. My background includes teaching experience in Kansas, Colorado, Pennsylvania.
I have over 40 years of teaching experience, both privately, (one on one) and in classroom settings, both at the public school and college level. I also am available to teach in the homes of students OR in my teaching studio in Williamstown NJ. All my students are encouraged to perform in various community groups, and in honors bands throughout the area, as well as encouraged to giving recitals when or where appropriate. My teaching involves a mixture of contemporary music with classical music to form a well rounded performer.
I use a variety of methods and am completely comfortable with giving diversified instruction to students of different age levels and skill/ability levels. I particularly enjoy giving lessons and the seeing the progression of student with Special Needs (I'm a part time para professional teaching grad 2 students with Special Needs). I keep my lessons current with a real focus on what interests the students that I teach, and tailor my teaching and their learning to what interests them. Depending on the instrument and what the student is doing in a public school setting, I use a variety of band methods for wind and percussion instruments. Examples would be Standards of Excellence, the Yamaha Band Method and/or Essential Elements.
My teaching is very student-driven. I try to keep the students interests as a primary goal in keeping their interest level and so that they can progress in a musical situation. When they are interested in what they are learning, they strive for success. I try to acknowledge their successes and accomplishments which helps keep them learning and wanting to learn more. The best way to learn music is to teach it effectively, and I ALWAYS am learning from my students in a variety of ways, whether it be a new group that I'm not familiar with, or another style or genre that is new and fresh. I love teaching because it keeps ME learning.
Alan is a fantastic educator and truly teaches to each individual and where they are at with their skills. I took lessons with him for several years and he was a huge part of my beginnings in music!
Taught me percussion from 7th grade all up through highschool. Was a driven and passionate instructor, gave me the best tools to learn and pushed me to strive for excellence. Gave me leadership advice as well as a disciplined practice structure that allowed me to gain confidence in performing all through High School and College. He is also a kind and lighthearted man, and I am forever grateful for all that he has taught and shown me.
Alan is wonderful! He's kind, patient, and so knowledgable. He knows just the right words to say to build confidence up all while being honest about what works and not. He tries different ways to get the message across and is fantastic! I can't say enough. My son has made vast improvements in his drumming, learned to read music and play xylophone all thanks to Alan! My mom is a retired music teacher and also thinks his skills, teaching ability and delivery are top notch!
