2023 - Musicians on Call - 100 programs award

Overview:

I teach students to transfer my extensive knowledge of music to anybody that is willing to learn. I started playing guitar when I was 12 years old. Later on in life, I started playing bass, banjo, ukulele and mandolin. I play in several different orchestras and bands. My orchestra playing involves a local theater company, as well as various high schools. I also perform regularly for Musicians on Call, a not-for-profit organization that brings the power of music to patients' bedsides in the Philadelphia area. I have been doing this for nearly 20 years and find it to be one of the more rewarding musical endeavors. I have had the opportunity to play at the State House in Trenton, NJ for a memorial service to commemorate Kristallnacht, a Priest installation, the Hard Rock Cafe in Philadelphia, the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, and opening up for Janis Ian, to name a few.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching via a large retail chain and through my private studio for several years. Although this has worked out, I find the Retail operation to be a bit restrictive, especially for adults with limited time. I think the student benefits more by learning at a pace that is appropriate to their skill level. I currently teach students from kindergarten age though 70+ years. I teach guitar, bass, ukelele, and banjo. I also can help students with the music that they are learning in their school bands. I have played many broadways shows via local theater companies and high schools.

METHODS USED

I tend to start beginners off with a typical book, usually by Mel Bay or Hal Leonard. I find these books to provide a good basis for music reading and building the required skill set to master their instrument. In addition to those materials, I find music through various on-line sites and from my inventory that students are interested in playing and compliments their abilities. For my adult students, I curtail the lessons to focus on the songs they want to play and understand their goals for playing at this stage in their life. I also use several different forms of technology, including but not limited to Musescore, Forescore, iReal, & Garage Band to provide backtracks, organization, and tab conversion (if needed).

LESSON STYLE

Prior to starting the formal lessons with the student, I like to understand why they want to play that particular instrument and the type of music that they enjoy. I also ask them about their musical experience. For example, can they read music, did they play any prior instruments, etc. Furthermore, to monitor each students' progress, I keep a lesson sheet that records what we worked on, what has been assigned, and any pertinent notes about the lessons. For example, do they need more work on timing, chord movement/transition, note reading, etc.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
