I have a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Troy University in Troy, Alabama. My major instrument was clarinet, but I have also played saxophone.
I taught instrumental music in public schools in Georgia and Tennessee for ten years. In addition, I have taught private woodwind and guitar lessons for many years.
I began teaching guitar lessons while I was in college in the 70's. I taught guitar lessons at that time, but once I got my Bachelor of Music Education degree, I began teaching private clarinet and saxophone lessons as well. I have taught instrumental music in public school systems in Georgia and Tennessee, and have taught privately at Cadek Music Conservatory in Chattanooga as well.
I like to begin with some technical exercises at first, then progress to recital literature. For guitar, I either use Hal Leonard or Mel Bay (I was raised on Mel.) For clarinet, I use Hal Leonard Essential Elements, Klose, Rose, Labanchi, and anything else that seems appropriate.
Learning needs to be fun, pure and simple. Gone are the days of the dictatorial martinet. The main purpose of music lessons is so that people can learn to enjoy playing their instrument. "Nothing succeeds like success": this is as true in music as it is anywhere else. Students have a need to express themselves musically, and it is the job of the teacher to show the student how that may be done.
Al is a very competent musician and a good teacher. His instruction is clear and easy to understand. He is very patient and enjoyable to learn from.
