2015-16 - Seminole State College of Florida Music Scholarship 2015 - Performed with Symposium Jazz Band at UNF
I have been surrounded by music all my life. Starting at the age of three and lasting throughout elementary school, I was dancing folkloric Bolivian dances alongside family and friends at many ethnic dance events. In middle school and high school I was heavily involved in choir. In college I was introduced to and learned different styles of music, gigged around the Sanford and Lake Mary area with a jazz quintet, and was hired by the music program to be the music theory tutor. Now, I teach and play guitar around the Orlando and Lake Mary area. As you can see, music has always played a big role in my life and whether I was dancing, singing, or playing guitar, I was learning a lot along the way. Years of performing different forms of music art has sculpted me into the musician I am today, and I want to pass that on to you. For the past three years I have been a part of the Seminole State College music program and for two of those years I was taking private lessons under Steve Luciano, one of the best jazz/blues guitarists in Central Florida. Steve taught me most of what I play today which is jazz, bossa nova, funk, and blues. Aside from those genres, I love to play acoustic, Latin, and fusion styles of guitar. With everything I have learned about music thus far, I trust my ability to teach guitar to any student of any playing level and to give you something to take away each and every time you leave my lessons.
My teaching experience is still in the early stages because of how busy I was during my school career at Seminole a State College with performing and schoolwork. During my three years at Seminole State, I performed with the guitar ensemble, the Jazz Band, a Jazz Vocal group, performed multiple recitals, played with a student led jazz quintet that gigged around the Sanford and Lake Mary area, and became the music theory tutor for the music program. Because I did not get too many opportunities teaching guitar while attending school, I am now driven to teach guitar and share everything I've learned about music as a whole with you.
My methods for teaching change with each student, meaning I cater the lesson to your needs. I am not going to teach an adult the same way I teach a child and vice versa. Everyone learns differently and at different speeds so I like to find out how you learn early on so I can tweak my lesson plan accordingly. I also, with certain steps in the lesson plan, like to give the student (depending on the age) options in lesson material because ultimately, you know how you learn best and I want you to get the most out of your lessons. Letting you choose your path as a musician gives me options on how to guide you through that path the best way I can.
My teaching can be broken up into two columns: the craftsman and the artist. The craftsman column is all about chords, scales, and technique. The artist column is all about musicality and expression. I believe that learning through songs you love is one of the best and most fun methods of learning and understanding an instrument. The musical devices that are used in all your favorite songs are universal to music, so you'll be learning techniques just by playing along to your favorite songs! Make no mistake, merely jamming along to songs will not make you a seasoned guitarist. With greatness comes practice and there is no substitute. The trick is to love your instrument enough to where "practice" just becomes playing with your favorite toy. My goal is to get you to that point.
