Overview:
I am a passionate and motivated violin and viola instructor who teaches beginners through advanced students. I earned my Masters degree in Viola Performance from DePaul University in June 2017. I have been teaching at Music for Kids (a non-profit providing music at no cost to children in Chicago), and Music House School of Performing Arts. I have experience teaching private lessons, as well as group lessons consisting of ten kindergarten beginner students. I am a violist in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and perform with Yo-Yo MA both in Chicago and on tour.
EXPERIENCE
My first teaching experience dates back to High School when I had the opportunity to coach elementary orchestra students. As a student at University of Colorado at Boulder and DePaul University, I completed String Pedagogy courses which covered all the different elements of teaching from how to manage a private studio to instructing your students. Currently, I teach a group of ten kindergartners at Skinner West Elementary School. This has been the most rewarding and challenging part of my teaching career thus far. I have learned how to manage, engage and teach children. I love the curiosity children bring to learning and I do my best to foster that. Sometimes this means working on a popular song alongside a classical piece.
METHODS USED
I teach students in either the Traditional method, or the Suzuki Method. I am also capable of doing a hybrid method catered to the students needs. If you aren't familiar with Suzuki Method it involves a lot of listening and singing in addition to playing the instrument. My students love being able to pick there own pieces, so I usually combine a classical piece with a piece of their choosing. When teaching, I create my own lessons plans based on what I have been taught and what has been successful. However, each student learns differently and I am eager to work with students according to their learning styles.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than when my students leave the lesson more motivated than when they came. I understand that it is a challenge for students to go home and practice, so I address this by setting goals for the student. I want the student to leave the lesson feeling proud of what they accomplished and motivated to continue learning. I want them to be able to apply the techniques they learn in music to other areas of study so that they can explore and be curious about everything. I teach my students to only compete with themselves.
